Building Literacy Equity Alongside Community

Our Mission

313Reads is a collective impact coalition dedicated to increasing access to literacy support for young children in Detroit with the goal of every child reading at grade level by grade three.

We do this by working with city-wide partners while focusing on literacy access, equity, and justice. We are the Detroit chapter of the National Campaign for Grade Level Reading and have partnerships ranging from local to national. We do not work with families directly; instead we are the organizing body that coordinates collective impact efforts among organizations based on democratic decision making. Our collective impact network is committed to addressing those systemic inequities through the levers of Early Language and Literacy, Summer and Out-of-School Time Learning, and Early Childhood Enrollment and Attendance.

Our mission is to mobilize alongside our community to address systemic barriers and ensure literacy equity so that all children in Detroit are reading at grade level by third grade.

About 313 Reads

YOUTH LITERACY IN DETROIT

Reading at grade level by the end of 3rd grade is one of the strongest predictors of high school graduation, college graduation, and future career success.

83%

83% of low-income fourth graders in Michigan are not able to read proficiently

9%

Just 9% of Detroit third graders scored a grade of “Proficient” in the 2018-19 school year

65%

Low-income students are 65% more likely to fall behind their reading level by fifth grade

At 313Reads, we believe that by working together we can change the systemic inequalities that keep Detroit students from reading at grade level, helping them achieve academically and beyond.

Tab 13 on the United Way for Southeastern Michigan’s Grade Level Reading Heat Map shows that, in some zip codes, as few as 3.6% of students are reading proficiently while 26% read proficiently in others. Part of our job is to build city-wide coalitions that acknowledge the discrepancy in opportunities and resources systemically distributed to and throughout our city and to come together to change that system.
